One of the more often whay to start a comic. Why waking up? I guess it's because it appears as the new beginning, fresh start. Just like comics (series, movies) that start with a new kid arriving at school.
Blank slate is not neccecary (I'd actually vote against it) but most of people like to have it. Unfortunately, they'll most likely write all over it later, with numerous flashbacks.
