Guilty as charge, I was caught having a few dead images in my archive. I don't really know how they got there, at the time they were updated, everything was fine.
In order to find those in archive you have to:
1. Check your entire archive
2. Have nice readers who will point you at those
Tough job. Still, that shouldn't stop you cleaning the rest of your site from dead links and images.
